Foundation Coverage and Finish
Foundation should create the level of evenness and finish needed for the look without covering every natural detail. Coverage and finish are separate choices: a product can be light and matte, full and radiant, or anywhere between.
Choose the coverage level
Light coverage softens minor unevenness while allowing freckles and natural skin variation to remain visible. It works well for everyday makeup and quick application.
Medium coverage evens the complexion more noticeably and can usually be built in selected areas. This is the most flexible option for many looks.
Full coverage creates the most uniform result and is useful for photography, events, or when a polished base is preferred. Apply it in thin layers to prevent heaviness.
Choose the finish
- Natural: resembles balanced skin with minimal obvious shine.
- Radiant: reflects more light and can create a fresh appearance.
- Satin: sits between radiant and matte.
- Matte: reduces visible shine and often supports longer wear.
Apply strategically
Begin near the center of the face and blend outward, where less coverage is usually needed. Use a sponge for a pressed, diffused finish; a brush for efficient coverage; or clean fingers for sheer, skin-like application with compatible formulas.
Match the neck and surrounding skin
Test foundation along the jaw and observe it after it settles. The goal is a shade that connects the face to the neck and chest rather than matching only one small area of the face.
Set only where necessary. Powdering the entire face heavily can change a radiant or natural finish into a flat matte one.
